Do you have a child that constantly chews on their clothing and is seeking sensory input? I am excited to present this guest interview and post with Lorna d’Entremont who helped develop the Kid Companions Chewelry with her daughter, Pierrette. When I received the samples of the Chewelry, I was impressed with the design of the product. It was well-made, attractive and functional for children who are seeking oral sensory input.
I asked Lorna to give my readers some history about the Chewelry, how to choose the appropriate Chewelry for their child and explain the safety standards of the product. See her responses below with more information about the product.

KidCompanions Chewelry – the ORIGINAL Chewelry
Launched in 2007 and This Is Their Story
SentioLife Solutions, Ltd. now has two lines of chew necklaces. They were designed by a mom for her child with sensory issues. Pierrette d’Entremont-Crimmens, mother of three young daughters, noticed her middle child was constantly chewing on her shirts, her fingers and the inside of her cheeks and this was distressing. After looking for an age-appropriate, safe chew pendant and not finding any, she decided to design one loved ones who need to chew, bite, and fidget would be proud to wear and use.
After lots of design, research, testing and manufacturing time, she finally had a chew necklace. It was FDA safe, tested for US, Canada, EU and AUS standards, and contained materials sourced in North America. Still hallmarks of our product today!
The same research went in choosing comfortable, cotton lanyards. Pierrette named her first line KidCompanions Chewelry. It was ready for market in 2007 and it is still going strong.

Designed to be BOTH a Chew Pendant and a Hand Fidget!
KidCompanions Chewelry was carefully designed to satisfy fidgety fingers when rubbing the pendant. The heart shaped pendants have a smooth “worry-stone-like” groove for anxious fingers or thumbs to explore. The pendants are made of two different materials giving two sensory experiences while fidgeting. There is a hard, smooth, raised, tiny heart in front surrounded by a different more rubbery material. Individuals who use the pendants as hand fidgets often buy the Clip-on version.
SentioCHEWS – WHY Design a Second Line of Chewelry?
Some parents asked us for a more durable chew pendant with a longer lanyard for their older, active kids. Our KidCompanions are oh-so-cute and great for light to moderate chewers, with the 2-part molding process it was expensive to produce so the price point was high for active chewers that need more frequent chew replacements.
At this time, Pierrette’s mother, a retired school teacher with thirty years in elementary classrooms, joined her in her business. After months of research and development, in Nov. of 2013 they launched the “Tougher-than-Silicone” SentioCHEWS. Focus groups made up of kids and adults helped in the design of four popular chew pendant shapes available in red or blue: Chubby Star, Dot Drop, Soccer Ball, and Ice Cream.
Durable SentioCHEWS Made of TPE – Tough, FDA Safe & Economical!
SentioCHEWS are made with the same safety features as our first line of chew necklaces. They are made from FDA approved food-grade TPE, made in the USA. TPE Is the Acronym of Thermo-Plastic Elastomer
We tested food-grade silicone and found that TPE is a better Chewelry material alternative, for the following reasons:
✓ TPE is better for environment (easier recyclability) than silicone (cannot recycle silicone).
✓ Our TPE had better weather and environmental resistance than silicone
✓ There is better tear resistance in our TPE (especially the thick SentioCHEWS Chubby Star)
✓ TPE is more stretchable, can have a “grippy/rubbery” feel (like our SentioCHEWS) and can be easily reused. That’s right, excess or left overs can be reused and made into other cool things!
SentioStyles Breakaway Lanyards
We needed equally cool, economical and made in North America lanyards to match with our new chewable pendants and found the tough USA made paracord 1/8″ size. So now, with many color choices of cool 24 inch paracord breakaway necklaces, we had discreet, fashionable sensory oral-motor tools that help your child be him/herself, anytime, anywhere and at a price of less than $9.50 US!
Child Chews Lanyards
All our chew pendants and lanyards are interchangeable. Parents who have a fabric chewer often buy our undyed 100% organic cotton lanyards. We also sell all our lanyards separately and they are available in 18”, 20”, 24”, and 28” lengths and as a clip-on.
