Do you want to help improve your child’s ability to sequence and tell a story? Putting pictures together and creating a story in a logical order is an important part of language development for a young child. We use our sequencing skills all day from our daily schedule to relaying a story to a friend.
I love Eeboo Story Cards because they are creative, beautifully made and give the child and adult the flexibility to do a variety of activities with them. There are a ton of different story cards including Little Robots, Fairy Tales, etc.
Each deck comes with 36 cards containing different pictures of a circus theme. One way to play it is to take three cards out and then encourage your child to tell a story about the cards. Depending on the age and language of your child starts off with a few cards and give your child a model of what you want them to do. For example, I would lay out 3 cards for my 5 year old and then make a story about the cards. Three simple sentences but grammatically correct and in sequence order. Then have your child, make up their own story with different cards. You can also switch the cards around to create a different story. Give your child prompts and help if needed.
1. Literacy (have your child write the story or a key word about each card): After your child tells you the story, have them write it down on a piece of paper. For a younger child, have them write down one key word per card (e.g. unicycle or bear for the car above)
2. Sequencing: Encourage your child to say “first”, “then”, to create a sequence of events.
3. Expanding Vocabulary: Work on using specific vocabulary to describe the card. For example, using the word unicycle might not be a word that a child normally uses.
4, Prediction: What will happen next? This is up to your child and can be excellent practice in working on prediction skills.
5. Problem solving: Using these cards will help with problem solving because your child will have to figure out what happens in each child and how they can be connected in a story.
6. Describing: Part of this activity is describing what is occurring in the picture. It is up to your child to add their sequence, vocabulary and prediction to create a story.
7. Using grammatically correct sentences: Encourage using grammatically correct sentences such as “First the bear took a ride on the unicycle and then met a pig policeman…”
8. Actions: Encourage your child to emphasize actions such as “ride”, “play”, etc in each card.
Encourage your child to use their imagination and think outside the box with these cards!
