Time Capsule written and illustrated by Lauren Redniss, is a beautiful book about creating a time capsule. Time capsules are really interesting to do with children because the world is changing every day. They are easy too since all you need is an empty jar, meaningful objects, and creativity!
If I created a time capsule in the 1990s, the objects would be so different than they are today! Each page of this book reflects a different object that goes into a time capsule and why. After reading this book with your child, you will want to create your own time capsule!
The book also includes a history of time capsules. The first recorded time capsule was at the World’s Fair in Queens in 1938. Lauren Redniss goes into detail about this story, which is interesting for both an adult and a child. She also gives a brief history of time capsules over time. Time Capsule also includes activities about making your own time capsule with some ideas for consideration.

Here are some questions to get started with your own time capsule.
- Why should we create our time capsule?
- What types of objects should be put inside to mark this time period?
- Where should we bury it?
- How long should we bury it? 10 years? 20 years?
- Talk about memory and how objects make us remember certain times that we have forgotten. Talk to your children about the importance of memories and being mindful.
When looking on youtube, I found this beautiful short film about a time capsule. It’s a perfect companion to the book.
