Personalized Picture Books to Build Social Skills for Autistic Children

August 17, 2020 by gravitybread Filed Under: Autism, Books and Mealtime, Building Self Esteem, Love and Friendship, Mindfulness, Special Needs, Special Needs

Flossy and Jim/Signature Books

Signature Books has joined forces with Flossy and Jim to create new personalized gift books for Horace and Co. Horace & Co. was originally founded after Lynette Dare, co-founder of Flossy and Jim. These personalized books were created after Lynette began writing her own humorous stories for her autistic son. Using the stories, she helped to encourage her child to try new foods, meet new friends and prepare him to visit new places. She didn’t want to stop there! Lynette was passionate about making the book even more unique by adding in your child’s name to the story. The company also puts your child’s picture in the book to make it even more unique and personal!

I was contacted by the company, In The Book a couple of months ago about these wonderful personalized books to build social skills. I received the book personalized and loved the stories, durability of the books and mission behind the book series.

About the books

In the Book has published three children’s books that can be personalized for your child. Personalizing includes your child’s name, their photo and a personalized message. The books are also hard cover, have vibrant illustrations and engaging text.

Personalized Disgusted Hamster Book

Do you have a child that is a picky eater? When you personalize this book, your child becomes the main character and the picky eater. How will the character learn to try new foods? With the help of his/her new friends! This book is clever in how it incorporates friendship, flexibility and “out of the box” thinking to get your child trying new foods. For many autistic children, sensory integration disorder may prevent them from wanting to try new foods based on texture, smell, taste, etc. By using an already loved food (such as cheese), the main character overcomes his fear of new foods.

Personalized “Where are you Robot?” book

This personalized book about emotions and a fun “hide and seek” game story is a wonderful way to introduce your child to labeling feelings. Learning and labeling feelings is very important for all children! Many children may only have the words for specific feelings and may not be able to express themselves effectively. As a speech language pathologist, I work with many autistic children that will respond “I am happy” even when they are sad or frustrated. I often advise parents, “catch the feeling when it’s happening”. For example, when Robot is sad, he wants to be alone. How does your child feel when they are sad? Do they want to be alone or need a hug?

Personalized Wibbly Wobbly Dinosaur Book

This personalized book is about a dinosaur that is scared of everything! How will he overcome his anxiety and enjoy time with his friends. This book is a wonderful book for her current pandemic climate with anxiety on the rise. Both adults and children are anxious about the pandemic and all of the uncertainties for the upcoming school year. How does Wibbly Wobbly becomes less scared so he can have fun with his friends? His friends helps and also encourage him/her by giving positive reinforcement! When reading this book with your child talk about the feeling of being “scared” or “anxious”. Talk about how we play with our friend including the use of masks and social distancing.
