Oscar Goes to the Moon, written and illustrated by Helen Tanner, is a beautiful story of a bunny who goes on a journey to find a friend. This beautifully illustrated book is a perfect bedtime story for your little ones! Oscar wants to go places and he daydreams about visiting the perfect place. How could he get there? He looks up and sees the moon with a rabbit on it, just like him. It looks close, so he tries many ways of getting there until he decides to build himself a rocket. When he reaches the moon, he meets the most beautiful rabbit he has ever seen.
Oscar Goes to the Moon is full of imagination with language, literacy and learning opportunities as you read the book. While reading the book, emphasize all of the places Oscar wants to visit. What places have you wanted to visit? How about your child? Why did he decide to visit the moon? This book can help lead a discussion about space and the moon. How do astronauts get to the moon? What is it like on the moon?
After reading the book, talk about Oscar and his new friendship with this new bunny on the moon. Since the bunny doesn’t have a name, ask your child to name the bunny! What does Oscar do after he finishes tea with his new friend? Does he stay or leave? Think of your own different ending to the book. This is great for prediction, which is another narrative concept when reading aloud to your child.
