Lady P’s First Day
Lady P’s First Day introduces readers to a little girl experience entering kindergarten during the COVID 19 pandemic. She’s waited so long for her moment to go to school, and now her time has come. Just when she is about to leave for school, her school announces that they are cancelled. How will she meet her teacher? What is school going to be like now? The book takes the reader through Lady P’s transition to virtual learning and then eventually back to school.
Back to school seems to be a different experience for each child. With all of the uncertainty in the world now, I think books such as Lady P can be a helpful tool in discussing “back to school”. Across the country, some children are learning 100% remotely, some are hybrid and some are returning back to 100% of the time. Lady P experiences both virtual learning and her return back to school. She also explores different feelings about each scenario and the uncertainty that come along with it.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is “Sometimes learning starts in one place and ends in another.” At the end of the book, Dr. Definis writes a note from the author about his inspiration behind the book and what he wants children to learn from Lady P’s experience.
