Is There Really A Human Race?

December 12, 2013 by gravitybread Filed Under: Books and Mealtime, Family Counts, Love and Friendship

is there really human raceDo you feel like you are your family are always moving at light speed? I know that I feel like that often with my own family. Always running around and not really stopping to smell the roses or just enjoy the moment.  Sometimes it feels like it’s all about being productive, going from here to there, etc. Is There A Really A Human Race (4 to 8 years old) is an excellent insightful book that can help teach you and your children to slow down a bit and enjoy the little moments. I love some of the quotes in this book such as “Am I aware of the time that I spend? And why do I do it, this zillion-yard dash?”. Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell have a way with words with this book and it carries great meaning. If we rush all the time, what are we teaching our children? My daughter told me during our last snowy day that she likes when I’m relaxed and not doing so many things.

Is There Really A Human Race? is all about comparing our busy lives to a “human race”. Are we in a human race? Sometimes it feels like it. The book also discusses winning and losing and the importance of helping each other. At least when you are reading this book to your children during dinner one night, everyone can take a couple of minutes to reflect on this idea. Excellent book!

Carryover Activities: Watch the video of the book here. Read this book and discuss the meaning of it. Review your schedule and find one or two days in the near future that you can just enjoy each other at home without having to rush anywhere. Excellent book for insightful conversations.
