Be A Big Hero
Do you want to teach your child about the importance of taking care of our environment?
I think this message is even more important than ever given our current pandemic climate. With people using single plastic items more than ever, we need to pause and think about what this is doing to our environment.
Be A Big Hero written by Jennifer Bacon and illustrated by Lara Calleja guides the reader along a journey of plastic and litter in the oceans. When we use a plastic bag and throw it in the trash, where does it go? It’s easy to forget about that plastic bag after tossing it, but this book helps remind both children and adults about the effects of using single use plastic and littering and what it’s doing to our oceans on a daily basis.
This story, which is told in rhyme teaches children about how long plastic stays in our oceans and that fish and other marine life mistaken plastic for food. What can we do to help reduce plastic and litter in our oceans?
Author Jennifer Bacon takes the reader through different ways to help such as using recyclable bags in the grocery store, recycling responsibility and not littering. These are simple things that all of us can do. I know I need reminders as well every time I pack my children’s lunch about using less plastic bags and being more thoughtful about containers that I pack.
Literacy and Language Tips
As you reading the book, use print referencing (pointing to words as you read) to improve print awareness. Emphasize rhyming words to improve phonemic awareness. As you are reading stop to define key words such as litter, backlash and landfill. By using these words in context, our children can learn the vocabulary more readily. Discuss the word Hero. About Jennifer Bacon and Sustainability
Jennifer Bacon has always had a passion for nature and the creatures in it. Growing up near the Puget Sound and the mountains in Washington State, water and nature was never far away. With a deep desire to help the animals affected by pollution, she started finding ways to make a difference. Her husband Sean and her sons, Logan and Cal, have joined her efforts in protecting the animals that live with us, starting with changing their lifestyle to be more eco-friendly.
Be A Big Hero is her first book and was originally written for her sons, but her dreams were to teach future generations about the impacts of plastic pollution.
She is currently working on her second children’s book with Mascot Books and hope to have it released by Earth Day 2021.
